I just graduated law school...finally! Moving back to Florida....finally! Taking the Bar Exam in 2 1/2 weeks...AHHHHHH! Been studying all summer. No fun til July 28. Still unemployed....AHHHH! Loans become due next month :( So I'm moving back next week to find a job, take the Bar, etc etc.

I got super discouraged from blogging b/c I don't have a nice camera, or sponsors, or enjoy self-promotion, and it seems that's all that "fashion" blogging has become.

Well I will decide for sure once the Bar is over, but for now I have a tumblr, which I'm finding to be really fun.

I have worn this dress a lot since I bought it last year. It looks good with sandals and tights/boots too, although I would much rather it be warm enough to lose the cardigan! For work, I have to do a lot of housework, errands, and also a lot of driving in the car, so I like to wear really comfortable clothes.

So excited to see my iCal switch over to February 1. January is so hard for me to get through. February is just short enough that it seems manageable, so welcome!

today's manicure: Essie Mint Candy Apple. I searched since summertime for a minty green polish. When I saw this polish appear online a couple months ago, I ordered it immediately! This light green is my favorite color ever. The polish itself is a little goopy/thick but I have done about 7 manis with it already. Worth it.

Snowboarding! I am getting a little more confident every time. This weekend was a little icy for my taste/skill level, but it is still fun to get out to the beautiful mountain.

pesto tofu scramble, yum I also have made this, my new favorite recipe twice in the past 4 days. I found it on a great new (to me) blog, The Hungry Desi. Recipe here. I made mine with tons of mushrooms, extra cherry tomatoes and tons of garlic. I really hate cooking in my tiny kitchen but this dish is easy and lasts for 2 full meals!

So this week will be pretty lame. I have to write a brief for moot court, among my other usual heavy workload. I am desperately trying to find an affordable ticket to go home for a dear friend's baby shower this weekend, but it is not looking good. $500+ just for a 2-night trip home? Ouch.

another new year

So January is almost over already (hallelujah) but I'm still in the "new & improved" frame of mind. 2009 was a roller-coaster, mostly just because I finished my first year of law school and started my second year, and that is enough of a challenge all by itself. But I also managed to fit in some fun stuff: completed my first half-marathon (1:53), visited home twice, visited Yellowstone, went to a fun retro costume party, improved my snowboarding skills, and I even got a haircut that I like.

This year will be even better. Although school is busier than ever, and I am not loving my nannying job, I have a lot to look forward to. Among other things, I am going to be back in Florida all summer...which alone would give me enough joy to last all year!

Last week was definitely a high note to start 2010 when I had the chance to attend the Kenneth Cole Vintage Black Party at Sundance Film Festival. I guess I was having a little too much fun to take any pictures of the beautiful people there :) Who knew Utah could party so hard?!
P.S. the Vintage Black cologne itself is delicious, I have even been spritzing it on myself, shhhh.

The drive home was not quite as amazing. It was a full-on blizzard through a mountain pass, super scary. So worth it though.

Besides having more fun this year (really), I am going to focus on building my confidence, building my fitness, cooking more often & with less dairy/eggs (moving towards vegan perhaps??!), and saving up for a long-deserved honeymoon!!

One more goal for 2010 is really get a daily (or, semi-daily) outfit picture going. I have been really pleased with my outfits lately and even if no one else is looking, I like having a record of things I've mixed & matched. I tried all day today to find a sunny spot in my apt, and the next step is finally getting a tripod!

I have been looking forward to Anna Sui/Target since I heard about it. When the rumor went around that the line was canceled due to Target not wanting to endorse Gossip Girl, I panicked. Luckily the line came out on September 13 as promised. I loved almost everything when I went to Target and spent about an hour in the dressing room...

This "metallic feathers" dress is so cool. My only dilemma- where on earth would I wear it? The body is a tweed, the cut is revealing, and the neck-embellishments are fancy.

I love the back.

I was hoping I could throw on a blazer to make it work-appropriate, but, uh, no.

The only other disappointment came in the cream-lace "Blair" dress that I loved so much in the pictures. It looks really cute from the front, and the details are great.

Unfortch, it was a potato sack from the side. A belt would ruin the look. I wish it would have been just a bit more tailored, and I would have been really tempted to drop $70 on it...

I was really impressed with the details in most of this collection. Maybe the detailing had something to do with the wayyyy higher-than-average-Target-price points. I ended up leaving with 2 dresses; one "Blair" and one "Jenny". I could have bought a lot more. I will style them later this week!

Leighton in Christopher Kane, proving that she is the most fashionably-interesting girl to be photographed these days. Of course the dress would not look good on everyone (or even MOST people), but it looks great on her and is sure to turn heads. The shoes may be a little heavy for the dress but she is so confident that I barely notice.

...and this shoe/pant combo look is now at the top of my fall wishlist.

Also, check out Leighton's new song Body Control- I couldn't turn it off for my whole run today.

Here is a story about one time when I was one of those customers that the associates groan about for an hour after you leave. I felt so bad! So, I have a long history with Express. I worked there for 2 years, have the Express card, always liked the store.

One day I saw a sale going on, and it had been a really long time since I bought any clothes. I was in desperate need of new jeans, and their BOGO 50% off was a perfect excuse. Even though I was pretty broke, I went armed with a coupon and my Express card, knowing I could pay off my purchases within 2 months. So I spent a good hour finding the right jeans, and decided to add a couple clearance shirts too. The associates were along with me the whole time, spending lots of time helping me with sizes and colors.

It was finally time to check out, my total was a healthy $100...and whoops- my Express card isn't swiping. I was not surprised, since I had not used the card in 2 years and it was super old. No problem, the cashier said, I will just call it in. Ohh man...at this point I was already holding up the line and I know that a cashier's tolerance decreases by about 90% as soon as they have to "call something in".

Well a 10-minute phone call later, and it turns out my account is NOT active, they have to reactivate it, but that means you cannot use your card today...it will take 7-10 days. AHHHH. I had no other way to pay for it...so I had to abandon! The dreaded "cancel transaction"!! The sales girl who helped me was giving me dagger-eyes!! I apologized 100 times and said how embarrassed I was, promised I'd be back as soon as my account activated and that I'd remember her name so she'd get credit for the sale.

Oh wait...this story actually happened today. And there's no way I'll be back- my embarrassment will definitely keep me away from shopping for a LONG time. This is probably the universe's way of telling me to not even THINK about buying clothes.

It is no secret around here that I am broke as a joke. The little money I do have is not my own, and will have to be repaid with interest. So I don't go online-window-shopping like I used to- it is too depressing. But I am just dying to get my hands on some summery sandals. I am craving huge platforms that go with everything. When I wear heels to school, I feel a little overdressed for some reason, but sky high platforms are easier to walk in and a little more casual. Shopbop has a wonderful selection right now.

Last weekend was a mini-vacation stuck between my 2 summer sessions. Cabin on the Snake River, Yellowstone, and fireworks for the 4th. The West is so weird, our Yellowstone day was 55 and f-f-freezing, and the next day way sunny and 90, perfect for floating on the river. I am hoping this doesn't turn out to be my only trip away from Utah this summer but it was so good to get away.

Summer school is rough. It's like regular, hard school plus throw in an internship to eat more of your time. My wardrobe needs to be more versatile too. I have to sit in class and be comfortable, walk to the bus and the train, walk around downtown, and look appropriate in court. I am really having to mix things up since I can't buy anything new for my summer ~~closet~~ rolling rack. One of my "hits" so far:
vintage silk shirt, DI. tulip skirt, Kenzie. gold flats, Target.

I found these brontosaurus earrings in a box of my old stuff when I was visiting home.

Today = me sulking. Grades came out for last semester and I did awful, there are tons of problems with my summer financial aid so I have no $$ for bills, and summer school is really hard.

I am at day 14/16 of studying for final exams. So, I am burned out to say the least (even though I'm incredibly excited to be DONE DONE DONE with 1L!!!). I have been resting my brain by browsing pictures of the Met Costume Institute Gala. I really hate the concept of best/worst lists, they are so arbitrary and stupid. I always find myself loving looks that end up on the "worst" lists. Like today.

I love this lace jumpsuit, designed by her. Where could I ever wear something like this? Bummer.

So vibrant, love the sleeves & detail on the leggings. Just don't look at the heels of those shoes...these gothic-heeled Louis Vuitton popped up on a few girls...like Madonna' atrocious thigh-highs. I can't look at a flared-heel shoe without thinking goth girl.

Then there were my 2 on the "best" lists: my favorite Kates, both wearing Stella.

So beautiful.
Back to the brain-melting studying ughghhhh. *Just telling myself if I do well, I might be able to afford a sweet lace jumpsuit someday*

My birthday was pretty fun, just because it was the same day as Barrister's Ball, fondly referred to as "Law School Prom". I would rate it WAY more fun than my senior prom where I basically was dumped by my date as soon as we walked in, but less fun than my Junior Prom, where I had the sweetest dress in school and went with people I loved.
Anyway, "prom" was fun because I was, well, very much loosened up...enough to just dance the whole time! And there was hummus there, so that was cool.

My dress worked out well, and I found some cute 4.5" beige/coppery Steve Madden heels @ Ross for 9.99. They were comfortable until I realized that dancing my heart out in brand new shoes had left gashes (not blisters) on the side of both feet. They are just now healing!

My mom gave me a Visa gift card for my birthday, and I am just trying to decide if I should get new running shoes or highlights/hair cut. I need both desperately, but one is going to have to wait until my summer loans come through! I have been proud of my running lately, it's been so hard with the weather not able to decide if it's winter or spring. I hate it. Jillian has been keeping me sane on ExerciseTV on demand, at least. To try and keep my motivation up, I have been reading some running blogs..Skinny Runner and The Chic Runner are inspirational and have some other great links. I was planning on doing the SLC 1/2 marathon next week, but just can't swing the $65 entry fee.

Anyway, I can't believe I am less than a month away from completing my whole first year of law school. It is so exciting. The year has truly been a blur and I struggle with feeling stupid every day, but I have a good feeling that I'm in the right place, doing what I should be doing.

Hope everyone has a happy Easter/Passover. I was super lucky to get hooked up with the Easter brunch at my favorite hotel in the city. I was thinking of wearing a white dress but with the weather still in the 40s/50s, it just doesn't feel right. We'll see!

although today saw a huge snowstorm, which made me wanna cry, the day quickly turned good.

my bus was re-routed due to a closed street, so instead of going to the very back of campus where it usually goes, went right in front of my school. I pulled the chord on a whim because my bus line doesn't stop there...but he stopped!! It was amazing. It saved me a 15 minute walk in the blizzard!

Yesterday we turned in our hugely important 20-page paper. Today feels so good by comparison.

I stopped in this little boutique that is on my walk home because they had the cutest dress in the window. I thought it might be perfect for the Barrister's Ball (and my b-day) this Saturday and wanted to check it out. It was a one of a kind, it fit me, and it is now mine! A little pricey at $70 but I just got Papa's birthday check in the mail :)
This boutique sells a lot of re-worked vintage pieces. The one I bought came from taxiCDC. I just checked their website and they have some similar pieces, I'll take pics of mine later. There were quite a few of taxi's pieces in the store and they were all amazing. Although made with vintage pieces, the fabrics are in great condition and they are cut extremely well.

When I got to my porch, TWO packages were waiting! Birthday package from mom, plus my new Etsy boots! I found a great pair at Gina Michele Vintage for only $15.

Now I am going to make quesadillas and watch Lost....great day indeed.

So, I ventured out in search of the boots. I went to a new F21 since the one nearest to me sucks. It just opened and oh man, it was insane bananas. They took an out of business department store and turned it into a F21. 2 floors. 5+ dressing rooms. 2 escalators. only one small section of men's; the rest was packed with women's. It was ridiculously overwhelming. I think that it was my first & last trip...gave me a headache and they didn't even have the boots. They had a similar-silhouette boot minus the studs, and oh man did I come to the realization that my legs canNOT pull off that height of boot. The top hits right where my calf muscle sticks out and completely stumps my leg. As mesmerizing as studs are, I just can't handle these.
Instead, I'm trying to find a more affordable boot for the quality on Etsy. Here are my top picks so far:

Buying that jacket at Target seems to have set off a spending binge. I am filling up internet wishlists with reckless abandon. I have become completely obsessed with these boots and don't know if I can resist. I am very torn between the brown & the black...I have 2 pairs of black boots...over-the-knee and ankle boots...so these would fit in the middle. On the other hand, I have no brown boots (or shoes, really) and even though I own a ton of black, I actually like the look of brown boots with black clothes. Hmm. What to do.

Since SPRING BREAK (!) just started I might try and head to my local F21 and try to scope these in person before I make a commitment.

Last Wednesday I planned my day around McQ's release at Target. Pathetic? Maybe. It's kinda my own little tradition...I go to Target on the first day when a new GO! International collection releases. It turned into a ritual when I moved here since Targets aren't that near my house anymore. I love going, it helps me not feel so homesick because Target is always the same and always a fun time.

Anyway, I thought twice about going last week since it was a Wednesday instead of the usual Sunday release and I have so much homework during the week. But, the denim studded jacket was calling my name and I wanted to see it in person.

I'm so glad I did! Even though I'm in Utah and that means that GO! International designers are unknown to probably 99% of the population that shops at my local Target and the racks are almost always full, this line was already picked over. I guess people (like me!) came far and wide to check out McQ.

The jacket was the only interesting item I scoped in the lookbook that was in the store, but it's great. There was only one M and one XL hanging there so I swiped the M and it fits great, much better than in the picture. I was so excited and also a little scared that I was about to spend $60 on one item (more than I have spent on one item in MONTHS). I checked out eBay and it looks like people are already putting the jacket up for $80-$120, but with no bids yet I don't know how well it would makie a profit. Buuuut, I think I'll just hang onto mine. It's so cute with dresses (and plain t shirts too), really well-made, and a great cut.

Now if only it will stop snowing so I can break out this Springtime outerwear....*sigh* how I miss Florida!

Getting through this last stretch of winter weather takes a lot out of us. For me, any little psychological boost I can find is needed to hoist me up from the brink of constant grumpiness. When I am walking through the sludge and slush, and the bus is 15 minutes late again, and the sun just can't seem to peek through the clouds, a good song really helps get my mood right. These boots were my Christmas present to myself.

Just like every other Gossip Girl fan, they've been on my radar since Serena wore them in the first season. I finally found them at a good price and in black leather, and I've been wearing them an almost inappropriate amount since they landed on my doorstep. I was hesitant to buy them since they are pull-on, over-the-knee, but my sister (who bought Serena's exact pair last year) assured me they were easy to wear and so worth it. I agree and highly recommend these to anyone-- but watch out, they have no traction on the bottom. No traction + snowy ground + walking in the bus aisle when the bus starts moving = I think I may have broken my tailbone.

Someday I will remember to take pictures again! Happy Superbowl Sunday! None of the teams I like made it this year, but it is an excuse to have friends over and eat junk food!

One year ago, I found the holiday sweater of my dreams, online. (Pictured at the end of this post). I waited around, looked in the physical store, and ultimately missed my chance. I honestly thought about the sweater a few times since then...and then today, it appeared again...

Exciting! This had never happened to me before...almost always, once something I loved is gone, it is gone for good. The holidays feel infinitely far away, but the air is chilly and I am in dire need of warmer clothes. This sweater may very well be part of cold-weather wardrobe additions!

The dress is a lame/tired trapeze shape, but looks a lot better with the coat on top. And I would highly recommend these boots, which I wore for the first time today. I put them on at 7:30 this morning and wore them up through my mile walk home without a single pinch.
After I made some pumpkin cookie bars and pumpkin bread, my only other big plans for break include sleeping in and doing lots more research!

So, I got those boots. My local Target had them in stock, so I didn't have to order online and fret about the quality after I had already parted with my precious, precious $34.99 (+tax). The frigid temperatures inside the reading room forced me outside for lunch, where I'm eating on the steps of the ~~Met~~ Pioneer Theatre next to ~~Constance Billard~~ the law school. Besides trying to NOT pretend I'm in GG fantasy world, my biggest challenge so far has been keeping my mind right.

4 weeks in, and I've already had a few bad days. More than time management or simply the hefty load of work I've been given, I have struggled most with keeping the right attitude about the task in front of me.

Today is a good day. Today I look at the assignments and know that I'm actually working directly towards my professional goals. I look at the job postings and clinical listings on the cork boards and get excited about the prospect of soon being able to apply to both. I know that I'm going to be at school for 6 more hours today (after already having been here for 4) and I'm ok with that. Days like today, I can tell myself to work hard because the end will be worth it.

On bad days, I can't even remember why I wanted to come here. The work stretched out in front of me is endless, with little relief for the next 9 months. I can't imagine grinding away at these casebooks every single day. I can't handle carrying around my 100 lbs worth of text books all the way to the bus stop, then to the school, and back again. I am trying to keep those days to a minimum, and truth be told, time is actually going by pretty fast. I'm sure I'll beg it to slow down as we get closer and closer to finals and final assignments, but I will be fine as long as I work day-to-day and keep my perspective right. I have found that I can't think about the end result when I'm tired or cranky...I have been getting better at stopping when my mind is in the wrong place, taking a break, and coming back later. My mind is pretty useless when I'm exhausted and irritated.

Sigh. Now I just need to work on getting more sleep...

Today is shoe of the day-- budget version! A girl in my class (from AZ) and I were lamenting our lack of cold-weather appropriate footwear for the upcoming winter. We both come from climates where little flats and some heeled sandals will do you good all year long. Last February on my trip to Idaho & Utah, I attempted to wear my flats in a blizzard. I guess I figured if they were closed-toe, I would be fine. Wrong! My shoes got soaked through (not to mention the uncovered tops of my feet) in minutes. So I have been searching for some (VERY) budget-friendly/cold friendly shoes. I found today's pair here from Target.

It's really hard to find boots on a budget, but I think retailers are doing a better and better job of putting some affordable and not TOTALLY chintzy options out there. For only $34.99, these might do the trick.

I have gone to my first home football game, seen my breath and felt a chill in the morning air, and felt a few crunchy leaves under my feet.

And, my toenails will no longer be hot pink. When the weather's chilly, only burgundies, reds, and other dark hues will do.

That's right, Fall has officially started to creep in.

I think Fall is definitely more fun when you live somewhere where the leaves turn colors. As much as I love Florida, it just doesn't feel as festive for all the fun Autumn holidays when the air is hot and the palm trees all stay green. I like a little chill in the air...but I will be eating my words come January when I'm trudging through snow to school everyday!

I just wish I wasn't stuck in the reading room during the last of these sunny, mild days!

I'm a law student! 2 weeks done, endless to go, but it has been a blur thus far. I have more to read and less money to spend than ever before in my whole life. It's a little overwhelming but exciting too.
I have a 3-day weekend and I am all caught up for Monday so I'm taking my time watching some tennis, reading blogs, and snuggling with my dog. She has been so annoyed with the decrease in attention.

I'm also having fun playing with my brand spanking new MacBook Pro. Almost worth the increase in crushing debt!

It has only been a couple months since I read Fashionista's declaration that black nail polish is dead. This hasn't stopped me from wearing my so-dark blue-it's-almost-black Russian Navy from OPI, but it is saddening to see how a polish chosen because it stands out has become so common.

I have never had long nails in my life (starting back when I had to keep them short for piano), but I still feel that short shiny nails are far superior to fake acrylics/French manicured/long pointy nails. This summer I have been wearing mostly clear polish, corals, oranges, or hot pinks, but I have kept my toes dark blue for the most part and still keep the option to wear dark polish on my hands.

Although I do hate when something I enjoy is also enjoyed by people (like the Lohans, LC, etc.) that I view as, well, unsavory, should I throw it out or keep on sticking with it? I think I'll stay with dark colors...as long as half the girls in my school aren't matching me, I'm okay.

Today's beauties come to us from the Prada F/W 08 collection. If you remember the runway collection, the shoes were real showstoppers.

I haven't seen real-life versions of these runway shoes yet, but the ruffle peep-toes from Neiman Marcus are more wearable while still keeping that extra-large-ruffle-flair. Both the real life and the runway versions are definitely fantasy shoes...only wearable in my dream life in which I sit by the pool in heels sipping bellinis all day. The new Linda Evangelista ads only add to their whimsical appeal.

I made a trek to my new local Target today for a few reasons, one being the launch of Richard Chai's new line. I got there about 4pm and some workers were just putting the collection out on the floor. It's fate! I thought, and I had the entire line, in all sizes, and I was the first one to touch them. I really enjoyed trying on all the dresses, even if Target's sizing is always a little off. Everything is very good-quality, and the only reason I walked out empty-handed was my current budgetary situation. My favorite pieces:

Ebony sleeveless ruffle dress, $34.99. If there is anything I'll go back for, it's this dress. It's a perfect just-a-stitch-above-the-knee length and would be perfect for work when worn with a light cardigan.

Sweetheart neck blue roses dress, $39.99. This dress is adorable and has great detailing. I just couldn't justify it since I already have some cute, bold-patterned A-line dresses without enough occasions for them to be worn. I have to warn any big-busted ladies: I am a teeny-chested girl (cough*A's*cough) and my correct size was perfectly fitted in the chest. I don't think it would accommodate C-cups and up.

Skinny denim, $34.99. I have to admit, these pants didn't fit me well at all, but I highly recommend trying them out for yourself. The detailing, again, is awesome. They made my booty look really nice...it was just below the booty that the legs bunched, rippled, and bagged. The color and the seaming won my heart and have set me on a quest to find the perfect light-colored straight-leg denim.

Broken-stripe printed trench $44.99. Finally, this full-length, fully-lined trench is a steal for under $50. The pattern is cute and quirky enough to help you stand out, but not weird enough to be unwearable. Had I not bought a trench right before leaving Florida, this would definitely be mine.

I am impressed, this is one of the best GO! International collections yet.

Yesterday I embarked on my first shopping trip since moving here to Utah. Well, second- I went to the local American Apparel earlier since it isn't attached to any other stores. Surprisingly, there is an AA closer to me now than there was in Florida. Like, 2 hours closer. I got 2 of the pocket skirts that I have been wanting for so long. I have to say, they really are amazingly comfortable, flattering, and go with everything! I broke it out for my real shopping excursion yesterday with an ancient white button-up from American Eagle, a woven orange belt, and my jeweled Target sandals.

I spotted a very disturbing trend while I was out & about at a very, very busy shopping mall. Tons of girls, ranging from Jr. High-age to my age and beyond, were wearing outfits anchored in athletic shorts. It wasn't your average (and forgivable) post workout I-need-to-run-out-to-the-store-and-thats-why-I'm-wearing-this outfit. These girls (and women) were fully made up with styled hair and wearing very workout-inappropriate tops.

Usually worn with flip-flops, although I did see one girl wearing her matching running shorts/dressy shirt combo with some type of heeled sandal.

Is this something common in Utah? This is new to me and I couldn't believe how many times I saw it. Maybe it's just because it has been so hot outside? Let's hope.

Creeping into my consciousness, that is. I am pretty good at staying away from sites where I know I can't afford the vast majority of items, like net-a-porter, Saks, Bergdorf's, Barney's, etc. I'll catch those gorgeous wares when they pop up on blogs of the well-to-do or in magazines, but I don't deliberately search them out. This way, I am not quite as tortured with completely unattainable images bombarding my consciousness. Shopbop's clothing has always been in the upper ranges of my downsized fantasies, but sometimes they have things that are affordable to me. But lately, they keep on adding more and more expensive brands to the point where I can't visit their site without a mini sartorial crisis.
"AHHHH why do I only fall for the most expensive things!? I will never be able to fully express my style because everything I can afford is cheap and ugly! I might as well just wear a sweatsuit everyday for the rest of my life!!"
Ok, deep breath, and everything's fine.
This might have happened to me this morning when an email from Shopbop announced the arrival of Alexander Wang to their collection of brands, and the arrival of a new beautiful dress into my mind.

The internet is back, baby. I have been sweating it out in a tiny apartment with no a/c...so literally, sweating! A questionable neighborhood, a kitchen that smells like something died in it, a shower so small that shaving my legs has become an acrobatic endeavor and I literally can't turn in a circle inside of it, there is no room for a kitchen table... but, they allow dogs and I'm right downtown so I'm trying to love it.

I hope everyone's 4th was great. I personally spent the day packing all my personal belongings and watching an Alfred Hitchcock marathon on tv. No complaints! I'm getting close to the end of my time here if Florida, so I had to make sure and go to my favorite hairdresser of all time before I leave. When I got home, I opened Jezebel to see that my girl Lily got the same 'do on the same day.

I promise I'm not just a creepy fangirl, I've been debating bangs-or-not for quite a while now. I like it, and now that straight-irons exist, I'm sure my bangs won't be the disaster they were in 7th grade when I had huge, thick bangs that curled up in the humidity on my way to the bus stop and never, ever looked good. Seriously- the day I got my first CHI iron, my life was changed.

And, earlier, I stumbled upon a huge sale during my last pilgrimage to the Neiman Marcus outlet. If only I wasn't trying to pinch every penny, I would have gone crazy. I scooped one Marc by Marc sweater for $43, and tried on a fabulous dress. I thought it was fate- 100% silk with lace arms/yoke, with a small bowtie at the neck. It was a size 2, which I'm really not, but I had to try it on since it was only $76. It totally fit! I was going to justify it but I just didn't like how the skirt hung from the bodice. The seaming was a little lumpy. Even though it was a great deal and quite beautiful, fit is the most important thing, and I wouldn't wear it much.

While doing my usual (obsessive) Etsy browsing (this time for cute hair goods), I came across this:

Although cute, this little barrette sent a shiver down my spine. It brought back one of my most frightening experiences ever. While in Idaho, I was taking a shower with a towel wrapped turban-style around my head to keep my hair dry. When I finished, I stepped out and looked in the mirror to see a huge hobo spider crawling down my towel, quickly making its way towards my face. I am deathly afraid of spiders, especially large, dangerous-to-humans, biting spiders. I had a near heart attack, couldn't sleep that night, and this little barrette brought back memories of that spider being so close to my hair...no thanks.

I'd much rather take one of these, these, these, these, or these. Cuter and much less nightmare-inducing.

1) I am completely addicted to diet soda. It doesn't have to be a certain kind; I like variety. Right now there are 12-packs of Diet Sunkist, Diet A&W, and Diet Dr. Pepper in my room.

2) Sometimes when I'm bored, I will watch LMN (that's Lifetime Movie Network for those of you who actually have lives). My favorite movies are the outrageously unrealistic ones like: the stepdaughter is slowly poisoning the stepfather so he dies & she gets his fortune; the babysitter is blamed for a woman's death after she starts sleeping with the husband of said dead woman; a psychopath hides their illness to get revenge on a former lover; a woman's former lover randomly moves to the 600-population town where she lives, causing lots of trouble...you get the picture. I don't like the movies based on true stories (too boring. unless they are starring Tracey Gold. And/or are about anorexia).

3) I grew up as a total tomboy, and I'm still struggling to get away from it. My life revolved around sports, so it was a rude awakening once school ended and I only ran/rode recreationally. I always thought of skirts as "Sunday outfits" and I am just now getting comfortable wearing skirts in day-to-day life.

4) I hate going to bed early. There is no real reason, and it makes no sense since in general I adore sleeping and find pure joy in taking naps. Also, you know those days when you just fantasize all day about crawling back in bed? I have lots of those days. My inability to go to bed at a reasonable hour has been detrimental to my studies as well as my stints as a member of the 8:00-5:00 workforce. Also, the late-night tv watching leads me to know of the existence of products like that above. Apparently it's a series, and I must beg, WHY!? Reaalllllyyy hoping that the word "uncut" on the box is not a double entendre...

5)My 2nd job (on-and-off for 2 1/2 years) is at this Disney World hotel that is themed in 1920's style. For most of the day (until the live music starts in the afternoon), they play a continuous loop of only about 10 ragtime/Joplin-style songs over the speakers. Everyone finds this very annoying and complains about the severely limited variety of songs, but I secretly love the music.

5) I have done 3 triathlons since living in Florida. They are so fun, but it takes a ton of time to train and get ready for them. I haven't competed in the past couple years, but I plan on getting back into them in the future. We are officially moving to the mountain west (for law school) where outdoor sports rule, so hopefully it will help motivate me to go out and run & get on my bike (unfortunately, nothing really motivates me to swim laps. Years of indoor swim practice killed my love of swimming for speed, although I practice when I have to).

losing it

First, I take a job that requires the same uniform each and every day.

Second, I take a second job that also requires a uniform, therefore taking away any time for me to dress according to my tastes.

Third, getting ready for school this fall takes an insane amount of time to get loans, housing, plans, etc, leaving me no time/reason to ever leave the house when I'm not working.

And fourth, my favorite store, Savers, shut down. I went to visit on this past $0.99 Monday, and was greeted with this sign on the door:
"Savers is closed and will NOT re-open." What a horrible shock. I had no warning, and it was the only viable secondhand store in the Orlando metro.

All these reasons have led to a total fashion drought in my life. When you don't get to choose your clothes daily, it's really hard to care about what you wear. I have still been browsing Wardrobe Remix daily, but that's just to keep the glimmer of fashion love alive. I know it will be back soon; I am moving to a brand new city in 2 months, and I will be solely attending classes so it will provide for many fashionable opportunities and experimentation.
I'm moving from warm, sunny Florida to the mountain west...anyone know of some good deals on off-season boots and coats?? I am not ready at all to make such a drastic climate change...I own like 4 sweaters! Any excuse to shop right?? Life is changing fast, and although this blog might start covering more of my personal life, I refuse to give up on it...It will be great yet!

After a long, unseasonably cold day that took Florida by surprise, I returned home to take a steamy shower and settle in with a Lean Cuisine spinach-and-mushroom pizza to check my emails.
Law school, Law School, WaMu, Law School, Sephora, Shopbop...
And there it was.
This happens every time.
Every single time I make a long-debated, serious clothing/accessory purchase, the item goes on sale or clearance not long after I have already parted ways with the cash. This time, my ill timed purchase consisted of some beautiful hidden-platform subtly-pointed pumps to coordinate with my new for-law-school pencil skirt/peplum jacket suit.
Not twenty-four hours after their arrival, Shopbop sent the email announcing their Tax Breaks sale. If you want the same pumps, you can get them for only $140, saving you the exact amount it costs to get another one of my wishlist items, the L L.A.M.B. fragrance roll-on perfume. It is also a good time to justify that pricey springtime blouse or handbag.

It goes in reverse too- if I wait out an item until it goes on sale, it will inevitably go out of stock. I can't win!

Along with looking like a bikini-clone, there are a few other styles you'd be wise to avoid when hitting the beach/pool/hot tub/lake this year.

Is there any explanation needed? No? Well please, someone make the droves of proud "G.R.I.T.S." t-shirt wearin' girls who wear this bikini as a symbol of pride understand that it just makes them look ignorant. You can be proud of your heritage, of course. Just do it in a classy way that doesn't have such negative connotations. Also in this category? Camo.

Ahh, the apron tankini. I didn't even know the correct term for this item until I was searching for pictures today. This is possibly the worst attempt at flattering modesty I've ever seen. It doesn't look good on children, it doesn't look good on ladies, hell, it doesn't even look good on Gisele. The top is sloppy, adds to a lumpy look rather than sleek lines, and when wet, hangs forward and exposes that which the wearer was trying to conceal in the first place. Sorry, there just isn't an equivalent to the sloppy ~~maternity~~ babydoll shirt that girls like to wear when bloated- every swimsuit shows all. Also in this category? The monokini (shudder). It is a picture frame for your love handles- enough said.

Finally, do not fall into the trap of "oh, a bikini bottom is just a tiny bit of fabric, the degree of tininess doesn't matter, it's all the same." No, string bikinis do not look good on everyone. Actually, they look good on precious few women; namely, anyone who has thighs. Please don't think that less fabric = more sexy. Please find rump/leg coverage that's best for your body. Low-slung, boyshort, and thick-banded suits work best for athletic thighs like mine and flatter anyone with curves. Some styles, along with strings, that don't work on our womanly curves: overt ruffles, a swim skirt, and the Brazilian. These additions make you look like you're trying to dainty-fy your strong legs. It doesn't work, it just looks out-of-proportion.
Ok, now the fun stuff. To get a truly unique, flattering swimsuit, it doesn't take a huge bank account but it might take some looking. Look at off-the-beaten-path stores, look for details like (subtle) ruffling, buttons, ruching, hardware, and bright colors. Swimwear is one part of your wardrobe in which you don't have to inhibit yourself at all. You can go classy or bright; demure or bombshell. Here are some of my favorites.

Day in and day out, I see thousands of tourists/spring breakers wearing carefully-chosen swimsuits. Some are flattering, some are not, and some people should really look in a mirror before they leave the house...but that is for another time.

These are the swimsuits that EVERYONE wears, the swimsuits that I see multiple times a day. You should avoid them in hopes of standing out and looking cute and unique.

Sorry girls, but pretty much every suit from Target has already been scooped up by someone else. I know they are cheap and cute, but so many other girls will have them that you may not be the only girl at the beach party rocking the pink plaid halter.

I guarantee you will see these suits out & about as well.

I know that nautical stripes are in style this summer, but thick, horizontal stripes are everywhere. Especially when one of the colors is white. Same goes for polka dots of any size and color.

Besides Target, mail-order favorite Victoria's Secret has a huge part of the market cornered.
I have seen this pattern in all possible colors and options: bandeau, triangle, spaghetti strap, and halter.no matter how mesmerizing Marisa looks in this style, try to resist!!

When this Roxy suit first appeared a few years ago, the wannabe surfer girl in me thought it was fun and playful (what?! I have totally surfed, um 3 times. Look for me on Blue Crush II). Now, this suit has permeated the suburbs and chunky tween girls who couldn't tell a longboard from a shortboard are bouncing down waterslides in this bikini:

And finally, the swimsuit that I have seen BY FAR more than any other swimsuit. At least 15 times a day, a girl swims past me wearing this, courtesy again of #1 swimwear stop Target:

To stand out for the crowd, my advice is to stay away from these repeat offenders. If you can't stand to shop anywhere but Target/Victoria's Secret/Pacific Sunwear, know that everyone else is going there too. Look for suits that are a plain solid, or mix up non-matching tops & bottoms. As always, fit is the most important issue and will allow your beautiful beach body to shine on its own.

I will bring you a cute range of swim choices tomorrow, if you can stand to shop outside the mass retailers! But now, I have an ignored dog, some Stella, and some dry skin that need my attention/consumption/moisturizer.

I didn't realize it has been 2 weeks since I posted, shame on me. I have been busy with work, celebrating my birthday and other various lame things. Probably the most exciting happening? My first etsy purchase. I have been obsessed with the website for months and have an extensive list of favorites, but I finally had enough $ saved up to make the plunge. Pretty Little World Vintage had a buy-2-get-1-free sale that I just couldn't resist, especially since our thrift shops in this area never have a good dress selection. They arrived this past week and I debuted my first one today, at church.

I got some strange looks from people, probably because of the large shoulder pads and the bum-ruffle. My mom said "where did you get that? it looks like a dress I would have worn...25 years ago" I go to a very conservative church (with my parents), where most of the women dress like this:

...but even more boring.

I'll show you the rest of my pretty new dresses later :) I have to confess though, that now I have already made another etsy purchase and am about to make yet another...it's sooo addictive. Well, I also have the worst addictive personality ever, so it could be partially that, too.
I also made out pretty good for my birthday, new perfume (Versace Bright Crystal, which I had never heard of but it suits me quite well) a suit for school next year and some business-y clothes, and a bunch of F21 goodies. More importantly, I got a night out to cut loose with my guy and some friends which hasn't happened foreverrrr! This should be a great year for me, I was born in the year of the rat and it's finally back, and a lot of changes are happening that are making me quite happy.

So, there are a lot of things I don't like about our current living situation, but on days like today, there's nowhere I'd rather be. The air is just heavy with the smell of orange blossoms, and I can walk my dog at night wearing just a t-shirt. I really appreciate this since last year at this time, it took a parka, 2 pairs of pants, gloves, scarf and hat just to take Lola on her last walk of the night.
Also, it is warm enough right now to wear the Jovovich-Hawk for Target dress that I broke down & bought.

It is the dress that's had my eye since preview pictures came out, but I kinda avoided checking out the collection when it first arrived--low funds still plague my bank account! I had to go to Target today and decided to swing by the clothing section. It was very well picked over- everything left was a size 13. But, stuck in a corner of Mossimo shirts was this arrow-print dress in size 5. What luck! I had to have it. It's a little big, but it looks good loose, the colors are adorable and I love the ruffles on the bottom.
Also at Target? Every pair of tights on clearance. Um, double score?!!! It was hard to stop myself from getting more than the 4 pairs I brought home.
I'm sorry to all who are still stuck in the snow & ice, but you can come visit whenever you want.

update: Oh man, I totally forgot about this! I had to return the dress, boo! Even with its supposed-to-be-loose look, it was just far too baggy up top. My little A's just weren't gonna cut it. I haven't found a suitable replacement at all.

Oh boy. The ennui continues. I had forgotten how much of your life is taken up by full-time lifeguarding. Yes, that sounds pathetic and believe me, it sure is. This is a job that practically anyone could do, and it's not very rewarding. But yet it kind of consumes your whole life. Working outdoors on your feet makes you very un-stylish, among other things. On a hot sunny day, you only dream about a cold shower and a nap in the dark with the fan on high. On cold, wet miserable days (like today, omg it was horrible) you dream about a hot shower and a nap wrapped in all your fleece blankets. If tomorrow is your day off, it no longer means "yeah! let's go out tonight!" but "yeah! I don't have to shave my legs tonight!" The days are 10 or more hours long, and by the time I get home and wash the chlorine and sunscreen off of me, it is past 8:00 and it doesn't leave much time to look cute (or have a life).

hmmmm....what shall I wear today...decisions, decisions...

Of course, there are some perks. Lots of overtime pay, it really is an easy job, and no matter how much SPF 30 I put on, all those hours make for a deep, natural tan (just ignore the gosh-awful tan lines that make low-cut shirts impossible)! But luckiest of all, this job is very definitely very temporary...I am officially going to law school this fall. I am accepted, just haven't decided where I'm going yet. It means, among other huge life changes, many fashion adventures in my future.
I am trying hard to not become a sun-baked zombie and trying to get re-inspired. There is a massive amount of cute shoes out this season. I can't remember when so many unique, fashion forward, detailed shoes were available at all price points...it's almost overwhelming!

I need a better camera

Yep, I definitely froze. 20 degrees plus 5 feet of snow were almost unbearable to me--currently I am sitting under a fleece blanket, chilled by the 65 degree air outside.

Unfortunately, my trip added to my recently growing feeling of ennui toward fashion. We spent wayyyy too much money on a stupid rental car (never, ever rent a car, especially if you're under 25), very much draining my finances and making clothing shopping veritably impossible for the foreseeable future. The trip brought to my attention the huge absence of cute cold-weather clothes in my closet, which will be a huge problem if we (most likely) leave Florida this fall. As soon as we flew home, I had to go right back to work-- to my job that requires I wear a swimsuit every single day. On days off like today, I just stay home working on law school stuff, and this combination does not warrant for creative outfits or even a desire to dress well. So I'm just spending my day waiting for Project Runway to come on, trying to fight the desire to order a large pizza, and wearing jeans and a gray t-shirt. Ugh I am just so uninspired!

But anyway, tonight they announce Project Runway's fan favorite. I have been trying to guess who it might be. Based on personality, I'd vote for Chris aka the only contestant with the brass to actually fall asleep during a runway challenge. He is awfully sweet and I am just dying to see him succeed.

I was so happy when he returned from premature elimination, and I'm hoping he is one of the final 3 (even though we already know he got to show a full collection regardless).

Based on design alone, my favorites are a toss-up between Jillian and Christian. Jillian's was my favorite by far from the museum challenge. And who could forget the awesome coat she designed mostly by herself?

Like everyone else, I feel like Christian is the one to beat and I've loved his designs since the first challenge.

I'm anxious to see who finally wins...this has been one of the best seasons yet. Every runway show looked like it was done by a seasoned, bona fide designer. If you want, go check out all four final collections. I am going to have to predict Christian for the win.

Oh, frick. Scary from top to bottom. It's like she took every trend to the extreme, put them in a blender, poured the result onto herself like "what the hell? It's bound to look hip". Hipster pout + bright lips + decorative scarf + kimono dress + belt-at-waist + stirrup leggings + peep toes. In theory, it's okay, and she is a very cute girl (by law, I can't hate anyone who appeared in "Girl, Interrupted") but here are some options with the same idea, but perhaps better execution and flatter-a-bility factor.
Keep it slightly more simple, and keep a smudgy eye but tone down the lips. There, now isn't that better?

Did you ever know something wasn't good for you, but you just had to have it anyway? No, I'm not referring to my sometimes insane cravings for ice cream or cookies. This item on my mind is widely regarded as unflattering, too 80s, or just plain ugly. The item is this pair of trendoid shoes.

I have pictured them with my dresses, with my skinny jeans, with my tights. I am watching them on 4 websites, hoping one will just lower the price a little more. I have tried to justify that they would act as my "Florida equivalent" to winter boots, since they truly just don't stock knee-high boots in the stores here.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but I will keep holding out until they drop in price or drop out of my mind!

Before getting ready for my one-person LOST party, I ventured out for some heavy-duty facial sunscreen to prepare for the upcoming UV-onslaught that is lifeguarding in Florida. I had to go to the mall, so oops, I just happened to slip into F21 to see what's up. Whoops! I didn't mean to buy that cardi, jeans, and 3 pairs of hosiery. In my defense, they were very cheap and very interchangeable.

I found it...it actually exists...That's right, a long, slouchy, grandpa cardigan for under $50!!

It may not be as soft as Gap's or Urban's, but it was only $15 and nice & warm. I also picked up some dark gray skinny jeans for $20, and some tights & knee-his. They must have just gotten in a new shipment, because they usually NEVER have any tights left. I found a duplicate of these chevron tights modeled by sexy Johanna for only $6, along with basic black and sheer black patterned tights a la Blair.

Another Gossip Girl-inspired item I and almost bought, but I passed it up for now:
This is Serena from the Thanksgiving episode, and I have been obsessing over her jacket ever since. F21's version might be the only one I could ever afford, but I couldn't decide if it just looked too fake.

And will it go out of style soon? I am still tempted.

I have been SO tired lately due to my *new job* training...yay new job! I am once again a guarder-of-lives for a brand new water park here next to Sea World. It should be fairly fun, except of course for the fact that I have to wear TEVAS every day (could you think of an uglier sandal?!??) The last couple days have been spent swimming for hours and doing practice rescues on individuals who aren't, well, small. At least I'm getting muscles again!

After months of frustration, I finally had some good luck at a thrift store...Savers. I found a boy's navy blue school blazer for $2.50 and a sweater for 2.99:

I have been having fun experimenting different ways to wear it. YES, it is another item with an animal on it, but I couldn't pass it up.

I am not going to start talking politics on my blog, but being a political science major & poli-sci nerd, I went to a Mitt Romney rally (even though I'm Independent...I thought it would be interesting & I had nothing to do!) As many people say, he sure is presidential-looking.

The be-socked wonder in front of me was SO excited, she couldn't stop dancing and bopping up and down, "MITT MITT MITT MITT MITT!"

I just am dying to say...WHY ARE PEOPLE VOTING FOR OLD MAN JOHN MCCAIN?! ARGGH WHY DON'T YOU GO SAY "MY FRIENDS" A FEW MORE TIMES!

I like the side-bangs and the use of color. I have long wanted to experiment with hair color (although maybe less dramatically) but after consulting with my hairdresser, we decided to do one more dark treatment before we add anything else (ah, the trials of going from blond to brunette).

So my hair isn't necessarily cool, it's just pretty classic and a little boring. But, if the google search I did is any indication, well then I don't want my hair to be "cool" anyway!

I stayed up way too late last night writing more personal statements, but at least I had To Catch a Thief to keep me company. Ahh, TCM, you always know just what I need at 2am. I watch this movie every time it's on (along with every other Kelly-Hitchcock collabo). This is definitely one of my all-time favorites. The scenery! The costumes! Kelly & Grant! French! The sizzling chemistry! A Masquerade ball!

You can't deny that Grace Kelly wearing Edith Head is a fashion icon. There isn't much more to be said about her that hasn't been said, and I love her for all those same reasons. My Nana gave me a Princess Grace paper doll set when I was young, and I've been completely intrigued by her beauty ever since. This dress was pretty much the best paper-doll outfit ever:

Cary Grant isn't looking too bad himself. I am such a sucker for a classy man.

Although Grace is the ultimate in ladylike beauty, I don't exactly have a wardrobe to emulate her style in this movie. So to fill my craving today, I opted for a Cary-inspired look instead.

What a great movie...I think I'll finally suck it up and buy the DVD so I can watch it anytime.

I so want those to be my new glasses.

I'm loving the short poufy skirt silhouette, and I do love the palette. Even though it's for Spring, these colors are neutral enough to work in any season's wardrobe and are giving me lots of great outfit ideas. Most of us have an item (or items) that we rely on when we can't be bothered to come up with a cute outfit. We reach for this "uniform" if we're running late, if we're tired, if we're going out to grab a bite after a long day. For me, this backup item is a very common one- jeans. Denim can be great, obviously, and I never want to banish it from my closet. But, if I'm not careful I could wear jeans every single day--and that gets boring. What are your old reliables?

Now is a great time for me to branch out; I donated a bunch of old jeans, and I have had really bad luck finding any new ones. I haven't been much of a skirt girl for everyday wear, usually I have saved them for going out or doing something special. This is probably due to laziness, but I can give change a go! I am excited to say that I've hit 100 posts! I never really knew if anything would come of this blog, and although I haven't done anything groundbreaking or made any kind of impact, I am having a lot of fun! I was so excited and surprised to get even one comment, and I love having "friends" and giving/getting feedback from all these awesome people. I honestly don't remember the very first fashion blog that I read, but I was instantly hooked and overwhelmed with how many cool girls were blogging. The first blog I found where I thought, "oh, I might actually be able to do this!" was Daddy Likey. It is such a funny blog, and it showed me you don't have to be a rich magazine editor to have an opinion on fashion. Winona also has such a great list of blogs, that it led me to many of the blogs that I currently adore.

Thank you to the lovely Wendy B for tagging me and giving me a purpose in life (showing you my boring bag is much more fulfilling than working...maybe). I was starting to feel like the last kid chosen for kickball on the playground.**

So here is my beloved bag:

My sister gave me this Urban bag for my birthday last year, and I've hardly used another bag since. It holds a ton, is holding up pretty well, and looks ok with most of my wardrobe.

Papers, papers. Lists, receipts, and coupons make up a lot of bulk. I am usually very organized and hate clutter, so I guess my purse hides my secret shame.

My Betseyville case is an attempt at some order...cosmetic-ish things go inside. Notice the Purell. This is absolutely vital to my survival.

I always carry a moisturizer. This Fresh Rice body cream is the biggest splurge ever (I had a gift card), but the texture is heavenly.

Applesauce. What can I say? It rules.

I am always making lists/writing myself notes, and I have a bunch of little notepads.

Finally, my fashion cred (joke!). A couple headbands, January Nylon, and the beautifully-photographed Urban catalog.

Phew! Wasn't that exhilarating? I also have the usual stuff like wallet, gum, phone-slash-mp3 player. I think most people have been tagged...if you read this blog (hello? hello?) then I'd love to see what you're carrying around.

2008 had definitely not been my year so far, but doesn't January kinda always suck? Hopefully. My bad luck continued today. When my Bluefly order arrived this morning, I was of course excited. I ripped into my package, so excited to see the cashmere & Joe's Jeans. Cashmere? Great. Joe's?

Wrong size. Wrong style.

So, they're going back and of course the ones I actually ordered are now sold out. Parfait! I guess my 3 pairs of pants will just have to last forever, now that I'm unemployed/broke!

Today really is smokin', however. I first noticed it during my run. The air vaguely smelled like a campfire and by the end of my run, it was a little harder to breathe. But the time I took Lola out for her last walk of the night, there was thick, stifling smoke hanging in the air. Further south, there are 2 brushfires that apparently decided to spread their joy all the way up to Orlando. Although unpleasant, I thought of the color smoke and how much I love it. You can't go wrong with gray. There is a gray tone out there for everyone, and it is wonderful to mix & match everything from gunmetal to charcoal.

I am still hopping mad about my termination experience yesterday, but I am trying to forget about it & move on. Well, maybe tomorrow. Today was my excursion to Plato's Closet, aka the only consignment store in central Florida. If you can call it that. I took my 4 big bags bursting with clothes that were still wearable, just not by me. While waiting to hear what riches I would be bestowed, I browsed the next-door Old Time Pottery.

After I got lost & found zen in a forest of fake flowers, I found that awesome tiki ceramic-ware that I wish I had a reason to buy. Maybe my consignments will yield so much that I will treat myself to something silly like that, I thought to myself.

I strolled back into P's C., head held high. "So, what's the verdict?"

A whopping $28. They handed back my 4 bags, still quite stuffed to the brim. "this is what we're passing on," they said. "Some of the labels are outdated, and there is some wear evident on some items". Outdated? I guarantee nothing was older than 3 years old, and yet I see, in the store, clothes that were in Hollister when I worked there 7 years ago when they still had 2/4/6 sizing as opposed to 3/5/7? And clothes from Express when I worked there 4 years ago?
Wear is evident? Some of it was brand-new. And please, first how about explain all the ratty/nasty clothes being sold here, and the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke coming from the clothing racks? But, I digress. I took my 28 bucks and dropped the rest of my clothes off at Goodwill. I tell you what, Goodwill smells better inside than does Plato's Closet. I'd also wear anything in Goodwill before anything in P.C. That place is plain confounding. I won't be back.

In the end, I can't live off of the bounty from my clothing sales for a couple weeks as originally hoped. Back to the world of job-searching. sigh.

Today I got fired for the first time in my life, from the worst job I've ever had. I was planning on quitting within the next 2 weeks, but I got fired and now lose my benefits and paid time off. Again I stress to everyone-- do not work retail for a big company! I know this may sounds vindictive, but I was completely set up. It's a long story, but basically I got fired for losing keys (to the store) that were never actually lost...the manager had my keys the whole time and hid them from me (really). To say I am angry would be an understatement.

The lemonade? I now have lots of free time this week to finish law school applications/personal statements. My transcripts are in, letters of recommendation are submitted, and after looking through all of it, you know what? I am smart. My professors said wonderful things about me. I made the dean's list every semester of college and was too smart to work in that crappy job anyway. (self-affirmation is good...right?)

The lemons? my benefits are gone, and I lost all my added up paid time off. I was so railroaded that I didn't even have time or the bearings to defend myself or speak my mind. I am thinking of calling them up soon to give her a piece of my mind...

Another bummer is that I had just spent money on myself in the form of a cozy hooded sweater and a pair of Joe's cigarette jeans from Bluefly. Hooray debt.

After putting on my velvet pants and going out for some therapeutic grilled cheese & ice cream, all is fine. Ooh, I just thought of some more "lemonade": I get to throw out all the stupid, ugly shoes that I have been wearing to that job out of necessity! hooray!

top model mania

Last night I filled 4 big bags with cast-off clothing from my closet & dresser, getting completely caught up in the Top Model marathon happening on VH1 all week. Truthfully, I was watching it long before last night and may be suffering from Top Model Mania.

Causes are: seeing the same commercials over and over again (Drew Barrymore for Covergirl has been in my bedroom about 13,000 times, and also, those damn ringtone commercials are from hell itself), watching the show get better and better up til cycle 7 then crashing & burning, obsessively watching Tyra's weight go up and down, all the frustration and anger surrounding the phenomenon of "Jaslene", seeing Tyra's crazy example poses over and over and over, etc.

Symptoms may include: voguing in the mirror, experimenting with extremely dramatic eye makeup, using "fierce" in everyday language, feeling like Melrose is your friend in real life, fantasizing about what Tyra would do for your week-2-makeover, and extreme depression at the realization that only 1 cycle remains til this MODELTHON ends.

For the record, I am now obsessed with A.J.'s haircut and want it badly:

UPDATE: my man said "um, veto. that will turn into Mom Hair really quick". Bah!

Anyway, my closet is looking sososo much better and I'm excited to add only very well-thought-out items from now on. I had stuff in there from high school that I probably haven't worn since then. I think I've finally completely let go of the notion "quantity over quality". Speaking of high school, while there, I was extremely obsessed with not repeating an outfit within 2 weeks. I guess I was a product of my affluent/preppy high school where the popular girls had a different Abercrombie shirt for every day of the month. I hadn't developed my personal style all the way and felt that I had to compete. I tried to get as many tops as I could, therefore having to repeat less often. This of course led to a wardrobe chock-full of filler wear, most of which had been edited out previously, but now is almost nonexistent.

I hope everyone had a wonderful night last night! Unfortunately for me, New Year's Eve is always exciting in theory but lame in practice. This is especially true when you have to work both NYE and first thing this morning. Bummer.

I thought I'd go ahead and do the ordinary posting of the goals (the ones slightly related to blogging at least), putting out there will hopefully keep me honest!

One. take more pictures! Not just to hopefully make my blog more spicy, but for my life in general. I never take my camera with me, and I always miss out on great photo ops.

Two. refine my wardrobe. I need to completely weed out my wardrobe, selling/donating the things that aren't beneficial to me anymore. We all have items that we hang onto for unknown reasons, even if they have been unworn for years. For me, it's usually a feeling of "well someday I'll have the perfect opportunity to wear this". But hopefully getting rid of those "what if" items will help me be more creative with my current items...and to be frugal as well! This lead me to...

Three. shop sparingly. Some days, I spend hours just fruitlessly wandering the internet, looking at lots of new clothes that I will never buy or afford. Although I think getting inspiration is worthwhile, there is a fine line between looking for inspiration and becoming consumed by the desire to buy. I should just keep a list of what I need and try to stick to it.

I really do get excited about the start of a new year. It is so full of promise! I hope to keep blogging even more, and hope to keep reading all the other wonderful blogs out there. Have a great year!

couldn't live without it in 2007

Wow, the end of the year sure crept up on me. I was going to break this category down into health/beauty and fashion, but tomorrow is the deadline for 2007...no one wants to read about 2007 once the calendar flips to '08!

For skin care, my best find was the seaweed line from The Body Shop.

I have always battled with horrible skin. Tetracylcline, Minocycline, and every other --cycline; clearasil, neutrogena, Proactiv, Dr. Murad; Retin-A, Benzaclin, Differin, Suphera, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, soap-and-washcloth only, and finally even Accutane have left me frustrated. I was fortunate enough to never have the full-face deep acne that leaves scars, but any girl who deals with acne knows how depressing it is and how hard it is to feel pretty when your face is dull/oily/bumpy. I don't know if it's partly due to age, but my skin has really been looking better this year. I really enjoy the seaweed scrub (I use it twice daily, it is very gentle), the daytime mattifying lotion, and the nighttime exfoliating moisture gel.

To stay healthy, I try and drink Emergen-C everyday.

It's great for people like me who can't eat a big breakfast first thing in the morning. I just have a glass of this, eat a small breakfast late morning/early afternoon, and I haven't even gotten a cold this year (knock on wood) thanks to the 1000 mg of Vitamin C in each packet.

Somewhere out there, at this very moment, a beauty editor is writing the words, "The best mascara EVER is still Maybelline GreatLash"!! And then I will read these words, and it will make me barf. Why? I despise Maybelline GreatLash! It has a small little brush and is very clumpy. I have only bought it twice in my life, admittedly not recently, but this year I tried out a lot of new mascaras. I do agree that DiorShow is amazing, but the $23/a tube price tag is hard to swallow for a mascara-holic like me. That's why I was so excited when I found MAC Plush Lash. It is only $11, but has the big fat brush that I loved in DiorShow. It is very smooth and silky, and I haven't had a single problem with clumping or flaking.

My favorite accessory this year? Headbands!

I have really strayed away from wearing noticeable jewelry, so a great way to spice up your look is with a little headband. I'm a fan of everything from a thin black Alice band to a thicker, embellished band. I have been even more inspired since headbands became a part of Blair Waldorf's signature look.

Working retail is killer on your feet. I have come to depend upon Dr. Scholl's foot powder to ease friction, and Body Shop's foot care scrub and thick peppermint lotion. Without that lotion, I could never wear strappy shoes again!

Skinny jeans are definitely not new, but this year I have become obsessed with them and find myself snubbing my nose at the flare-leg pants in my closet. I am not a skinny-mini, but I think they're flattering and so much more fashionable than the flare legs of high school girls. Every pant I bought this year had a straight leg, and hopefully they will stay en vogue for years to come.

2007 has been a crazy year for me, and I'm especially excited to see what 2008 will bring both fashionably and personally. Blogging has been such a fun experience so far and I'm sure it will only get better. Anyway, I won't get too mushy here!! What were your favorite things this year?

that extra half an inch

My sister came home for Christmas and handed me this book. She knows I love all things Beckham (I'm not embarrassed!) and so is letting me borrow her copy of That Extra Half an Inch.

I spent about an hour browsing through the book so far, and I have to say, it's pretty amusing. Some fun facts about Posh:

-She gets acrylics on her toes in the summer
-She likes to ski, but won't wear those bulky ski goggles
-Her infamous "I have never finished a book" quote was misinterpreted by a reporter after she said that since she has become a mum, she has been so busy that she hasn't finished a single book
-She showers and carries out her complete beauty regimen 2x a day
-She does not let her face get tan

There are actually lots of good tips in there. She urges us not to spend money on trendy items, but to always buy good quality in staples such as denim, boots, and a black dress. She talks about really thinking through an outfit before wearing it. Don't be guilty of just throwing on a shirt because it's on top of the pile and you're too lazy to keep looking for a more suitable option. Pay attention to the little details that make a big difference in your look- clean shiny nails, frizz-less hair, and moisturized skin.

Although she is over-the-top, I have loved Posh since she bopped around the screen in "Wannabe" and will probably always love her. In the book her tone is playful yet knowledgeable, and I will definitely continue reading her book and hopefully pick up some more glam tips.

pre-christmas bits

I'm getting very excited for Christmas Eve --in my family, it is our "big night" with a king crab-leg feast, lots of homemade drinks & treats, and opening presents (except Santa's, of course).

I started getting in the real holiday spirit during my final mall trip, where I picked up these little pre-christmas goodies:

I got 2 of the little French penguin mug/plate sets from Anthropologie, where they were 1/2 off. While there I also picked up this little papier-mache box, which is perfect for keeping my stray jewelry from being strewn all over my dresser (also 1/2 off).

These silver brocade shoes are from Forever 21 -- I know! -- for only $20. I just had to have them, though. My Nana had shoes exactly like these from the 50s. The only problem with hers is their AAA narrow width. My slightly-wider-than-average feet can't handle that, so I'm glad I found these shoes that give me fond memories of dressing up in Nana's fabulous vintage party clothes.

I wore them out last night to see Sweeney Todd. It was incredibly enjoyable. I loved the songs, they had a lot of very subtle humor. There was a couple sitting in front of us who obviously weren't expecting a full-blown musical, and walked out after about the first 10 minutes of solid singing. I think it's the kind of movie that you really have to see in the theater- the dark, convincing atmosphere is best experienced when larger-than-life. If you go see it, be sure to watch for Mrs. Lovett's "By the Sea" montage. Hilarious.

I of course have to work tomorrow (dreading it), but hopefully you don't. Have a great Christmas Eve, everyone.

christmas shopping

with a free day on my hands, I made a trek to the mall for the little odds & ends that would signal the END of my Christmas shopping. What trek it was-- my usual 15 minute drive time took almost an hour, and even singing along loudly with The Clash, Led Zepplin, & Timbaland would not ease my creeping road rage.

On the bright side, I was in and out in about 2 hours and my Christmas shopping is completely done. For some reason, the whole mall smelled like gingerbread so it made things a little more bearable. I had to stop by Forever 21 to see if they had the moose sweater (they didn't), Urban Outfitters for my sister's stocking stuffers, and Neiman Marcus for stuff to pamper my main squeeze. My outfit today was definitely inspired by the Blair look on Gossip Girl, but I of course kept my own style so that I wasn't running around looking like a complete Blair-wannabe with my curled hair, headband, collared shirt, skinny jeans, and leopard print peep-toes:

But again, I could not justify a purchase only a mere 3 days before Christmas, especially one that is slightly too heavy to be useful in Florida.

And although I did not find the moose sweater of my Christmas dreams, I found another ugly sweater that is still on my mind-

old man stripes, orange mixed with gray and brown, two different patterns; it is great. If my Christmas bounty doesn't include a sweater, I'll probably be back.

I have to admit that I spent a little bit of money on myself today, just not on any clothes, to congratulate myself. I got a surprise last night in the form of my LSAT scores, more than a week and a half before scheduled arrival. They weren't tip-top Harvard-worthy, but they were certainly okay (possibly worthy of the majority of schools numbered 15 and higher), and I feel immense relief. I think I can now say with (cautious) certainty that I will get into a law school. I found a few little treasures that are in no danger of encroaching on my Christmas list gifts, and I'll be sure to post them tomorrow.
